But Dr. Timberlake believes...

What grade did you finish, of course, is not really a medical question. But Dr. Timberlake believes he needs this information in disability cases because people who have only a high school education aren’t going to be able to get a sit-down job.

Dr. Timberlake is making a judgment call that if you have a particular back problem and a college degree, you’re not disabled. Without the degree, you are. In Hale County, there was one guy whose name was mentioned in almost every story about becoming disabled: Dr. Perry Timberlake, shown in an examination room at the Hale County Hospital Clinic in Greensboro, Alabama.

Over and over again, I’d listen to someone’s story of how back pain meant they could no longer work, or how a shoulder injury had put them out of a job. Then I would ask: What about a job where you don’t have to lift things, or a job where you don’t have to use your shoulder, or a job where you can sit down? They would look at me as if I were asking, “How come you didn’t consider becoming an astronaut?”

"You just went to the Google home page.

What just actually happened? Well, when you know a bit of about how browsers work, it’s not quite that simple. You’ve just put into play HTTP, HTML, CSS, ECMAscript, and more. Garrud, no longer needing to organize an underground female fight club trained in the fine art of punching cops, continued running her schools, wrote a couple magazine articles about self-defense, and ran the woman athlete’s branch of the Women’s Freedom League. Later in life she taught classes to London police officers (they were curious what that whole ju-jitsu cop-flipping thing was all about, and once she knew the techniques weren’t going to be used to oppress her friends Edith was happy to oblige them), and worked as a martial arts fight choreographer for stage and film.”

- Badass - Edith Garrud

(via Photos of Children From Around the World With Their Most...

(via Photos of Children From Around the World With Their Most Prized Possessions | Feature Shoot)

Video of Apollo Robbins Pickpocketing : The New Yorker

Video of Apollo Robbins Pickpocketing : The New Yorker:
In the January 7th issue of the magazine, Adam Green profiles the pickpocket Apollo Robbins. Green writes: “Robbins, who is thirty-eight and lives in Las Vegas, is a peculiar variety-arts hybrid, known in the trade as a theatrical pickpocket. Among his peers, he is widely considered the best in the world at what he does, which is taking things from people’s jackets, pants, purses, wrists, fingers, and necks, then returning them in amusing and mind-boggling ways.” Unlike magicians, Robbins will reveal his methods. “Learning how magic tricks are done is often disappointing, because it’s not really magic,” Green says. “With Robbins, though, effect and method are one and the same, and seeing how he accomplishes his thefts is just as impressive as witnessing, or failing to witness, the acts themselves.”

"But that tracks pretty solidly with my own experience, at my house; it won’t surprise you to learn..."

“But that tracks pretty solidly with my own experience, at my house; it won’t surprise you to learn that I don’t think videogames are a social ill, or worthy of the moral panic that currently surrounds them in and outside of the industry. What I will say is that videogames are, in entertainment terms, an Apex Predator; nothing else compares to them, minute for minute, they deliver brain chemicals at an unprecedented rate. They’re pure HFCS, and the other things you fill a life with don’t deliver those squirts with the same regularity. It’s a matter of acclimatization for people maturing in this environment. In the end, I can say with confidence that books are right out, and movies; dubstep and porn gifs will be all they have left.”

- Penny Arcade - Totally Of The Mearas

riotclitshave:

This incredible photo marks the end of Matador Torero Alvaro Munera’s career. He collapsed in remorse mid-fight when he realized he was having to prompt this otherwise gentle beast to fight. He went on to become an avid opponent of bullfights. Even grievously wounded by picadors, he did not attack this man.

Torrero Munera is quoted as saying of this moment: “And suddenly, I looked at the bull. He had this innocence that all animals have in their eyes, and he looked at me with this pleading. It was like a cry for justice, deep down inside of me. I describe it as being like a prayer - because if one confesses, it is hoped, that one is forgiven. I felt like the worst shit on earth.”

Wow. Moving and strange.

It’s strange to be an adult and feel like an orphan; only, I chose to be one. If I have children, they won’t have grandparents. If I made a family tree, there would be two huge barren spots, limbs with no leaves.

When I look back at those girlhood photos, the one my father sends me, I don’t have the urge to spout platitudes, like abuse survivors that tell their inner child “You are strong, you’ll be OK.” I just can’t do that.
